Destination Overview
Set within the vast Tengger Caldera and surrounded by the Sea of Sand (Lautan Pasir), Bromo offers a striking landscape shaped by both volcanic forces and centuries of cultural tradition. Its name derives from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation.
Part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, the volcano holds deep spiritual significance for the Tenggerese people, believed to be descendants of the Majapahit era. Each year, they perform the Yadnya Kasada ceremony, offering food and other offerings into the crater as an act of devotion to the mountain deities.
Beyond its cultural heritage, Bromo is celebrated for its dramatic sunrise views from vantage points such as Penanjakan and Kingkong Hill. On clear mornings, Mount Semeru may be seen erupting in the distance, creating a remarkable backdrop to the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Together, its dramatic scenery and living traditions make Mount Bromo a unique destination where natural wonder and cultural heritage exist in harmony.
