Two of Java’s most dramatic waterfalls — one wide and thundering, one tall and sacred. Here is how to choose.
Tumpak Sewu — the thousand waterfalls
A wide, horseshoe-shaped curtain of hundreds of streams with Mount Semeru behind it. The rim viewpoint is easy; the descent to the base uses ladders and ropes and takes 2–3 hours.
Best for: photographers, adventurous travellers, combined with a Malang stay.
Madakaripura — the sacred canyon
A 200 m waterfall hidden in a narrow canyon near Bromo, believed to be Gajah Mada’s final meditation site. The walk is easier but you will get wet.
Best for: families, history lovers, and adding a waterfall to a short Bromo trip.
Our tip
On a 2-day Bromo trip, add Madakaripura. On a 4-day circuit, Tumpak Sewu is worth the extra drive.
