Cold sunrises, sandy calderas and sulfur gas — here is exactly what to bring for East Java’s two most famous volcanoes.
East Java's volcanoes are tropical by latitude but alpine by temperature. At the Penanjakan viewpoint, the air before sunrise often sits between 3 and 10°C, and the Ijen crater rim is windy and damp at 2 a.m.
