Each year the Tenggerese climb Bromo’s crater to offer crops and livestock to the mountain deities.
The Tenggerese, believed to be descendants of the Majapahit era, still practise a unique form of Hinduism around Bromo.
The ceremony
During Yadnya Kasada, villagers gather at Pura Luhur Poten in the Sea of Sand at night, then climb to the crater rim at dawn to throw offerings of vegetables, fruit and livestock into the crater.
Visiting during Kasada
The ceremony is a sacred event. Crowds are large and some areas close. If your travel dates fall during Kasada, our guides will plan respectful viewing points and adjust the schedule.
